Used CAT 6015 Buying Guide: Inspection, Costs and Truck Match
A buyer-focused guide to assessing a used CAT 6015 for mining or quarry loading, including model identity, bucket selection, truck matching, operating cost, inspection and transport.

Applicable scope
Model-level procurement guidance for used CAT 6015 hydraulic mining shovels. Manufacturer reference data is configuration dependent; 6015B references are identified separately. Verify the identity, condition, price, operating records and shipment configuration of the proposed unit before purchasing.
Buying a used CAT 6015 starts with three checks: production fit, documented machine condition and the full cost of putting it to work. A suitable purchase needs to match your material, haul fleet and maintenance resources, as well as your budget.
This guide takes mining contractors, quarry operators and procurement teams through those checks, from comparing configurations to agreeing on inspection and delivery. Manufacturer specifications provide a reference; records and tests establish the condition of the exact machine you may buy.
Before You Shortlist a Used CAT 6015
Prepare a brief that answers five questions:
- What will it load? State the material, loose density and typical fragmentation.
- What production does the site require? Define the target and planned working schedule.
- Which trucks will it load? Provide model, payload and haul-cycle information.
- How will it be maintained? Identify local service resources and parts access.
- What must the budget cover? Include inspection, preparation, transport and commissioning.
Use the same brief when contacting different sellers. It makes their proposals easier to compare and helps identify a mismatch before detailed negotiations.
Is a CAT 6015 the Right Size for My Operation?
Start with your loading system. Provide the material type and loose density, typical fragmentation, working bench geometry, truck models and daily production target. Include operating hours, site conditions and the parts and service resources available at the destination.
The machine should be assessed together with the haul fleet. A large bucket does not deliver its potential if trucks arrive too slowly, positioning is inefficient or the loading area restricts movement. Conversely, an attractive purchase price may not offset a poor production match.
What Are the Official CAT 6015 Specifications?
The following figures are manufacturer references, not verified specifications for a machine currently offered for sale. The engine-power entry refers specifically to the Tier 4 Final version.
| Item | Reference |
|---|---|
| Machine type | Hydraulic mining shovel; backhoe configuration |
| Operating weight | 140,000 kg / 140 metric tonnes, stated standard configuration |
| Engine | Cat C27 |
| Gross power, Tier 4 Final | 615 kW / 824 hp, SAE J1995 |
| Standard rock bucket reference | 8.1 m³ with the stated 3.4 m stick configuration |
| Bucket payload | 14.6 metric tonnes, published model reference |
The operating-weight reference includes the base machine, front attachment, 700 mm track pads, the stated standard rock bucket, full fuel and lubricants. Shipping weight must be established for the agreed transport configuration.

Is a CAT 6015 the Same as a CAT 6015B?
Do not use the model names interchangeably when comparing offers. For example, the cited 6015 Tier 4 Final reference lists 615 kW gross power, while the older 6015B brochure lists 606 kW gross power under SAE J1995. A 606 kW figure can also describe net power in a different 6015 specification, so the rating standard and version matter.
Ask for a clear model plate, serial number, build year and engine/emissions identification. Match specifications and replacement parts to that unit. A difference in catalogue power alone does not determine which used machine is the better purchase; condition, configuration and support also matter.
Which Trucks Match a CAT 6015?
Caterpillar’s published pass-match table provides these planning references:
| Cat truck | Reference loading passes |
|---|---|
| 773 | 4 |
| 775 | 5 |
| 777 | 7 |
Check your truck’s actual payload limit, body configuration and loading conditions before using these figures. They are not a promise that every used machine or material will achieve the same cycle.
For a site assessment, record actual bucket payload, loading-cycle time, truck spotting time, haul-cycle time and machine availability. Use measured payload and cycle information to estimate output; evaluate the number of trucks needed from the full loading-and-hauling cycle.
Is the Standard Bucket Suitable for My Material?
Bucket capacity measures volume; bucket payload measures mass. An 8.1 m³ bucket does not establish the appropriate load for every material. Material density, bucket construction, wear package and front-linkage configuration all affect selection.
Send your material description, loose-density information and fragmentation photographs with the inquiry. Request the fitted bucket’s identification, capacity, condition and compatibility data. Use the applicable manufacturer bucket chart to assess the combination, particularly if a longer stick or a different wear package is fitted.
What Should I Expect to Pay for a Used CAT 6015?
A meaningful CAT 6015 price comparison starts with identified machines. Ask each seller to state the serial number, represented hours, rebuild history, included bucket and attachments, inspection scope and sale terms.
Compare the total procurement budget:
Machine price + inspection + agreed repairs/preparation + dismantling and loading + transport + destination costs + reassembly and commissioning.
Have each quotation identify included work and exclusions. A cheaper machine with uncertain component condition or a large preparation requirement may produce a different total budget from the headline offer. No current unit price is established by this model guide.
How Much Fuel Does a CAT 6015 Use?
Request recorded fuel data from the exact machine and a comparable duty cycle. An unsupported litres-per-hour figure is not enough for a purchasing decision: idle time, travel, loading conditions and operating practices change how that figure should be interpreted.
Calculate costs using fuel and production records for the same reporting period:
Fuel cost per tonne = total fuel used × local fuel price ÷ tonnes loaded.
Operating cost per tonne = fuel, labour, maintenance and other defined operating costs ÷ tonnes loaded.
For a full ownership comparison, separately identify finance/depreciation and rebuild allowances and include them consistently. Keep engine hours, productive hours and material tonnage clearly defined. This lets you compare offers on the work delivered instead of treating a lower hourly fuel figure as proof of lower cost.
What Should Be Inspected on a Used CAT 6015?
Agree on a machine-specific inspection scope before purchase. The following evidence helps turn a sales description into an assessable condition record:
| Area | Evidence or checks to agree |
|---|---|
| Identity and hours | Model/serial plate, meter image, available electronic hour records and maintenance history |
| C27 engine and cooling | Cold-start and warm-running observations, fault history, service/rebuild records and suitable diagnostic checks |
| Hydraulic system | Warm-machine operation, leaks, component history and agreed professional tests |
| Swing and travel | Operational observations, inspection findings and repair history |
| Undercarriage | Measured wear, component condition and a documented assessment |
| Structure and linkage | Boom, stick, frame, pins and disclosed weld repairs; additional inspection where indicated |
| Bucket and wear parts | Included bucket identity, teeth, lip, wear protection and known repairs |
Total machine hours and hours since a component rebuild answer different questions. Ask what was rebuilt, when it was done, what parts were used and which records support the work. A recent paint finish or a yard walkaround cannot establish internal component condition.
Will Parts and Service Be Available Where I Operate?
Before ordering, send the serial number and planned location to the support providers you expect to use. Obtain specific information on critical parts, service capability and delivery times.
Discuss the maintenance plan for the engine, hydraulic components, cooling system, swing/travel systems and undercarriage. Where downtime exposure is significant, request a proposed critical-spares list and distinguish locally stocked items from parts that must be ordered. Parts availability and cost need destination-specific confirmation.
How Is a CAT 6015 Shipped to the Destination?
Do not request freight from operating weight alone. Ask for an agreed transport configuration and a packing list that identifies each shipment unit, dimensions, weight and handling requirements.
Define who is responsible for any dismantling, preservation, loading, port handling, reassembly, fluid replenishment and commissioning. Confirm lifting arrangements, route acceptance and access from the arrival port to the mine. Check the exact machine’s import and emissions documentation with the appropriate destination specialists.
A delivered-port quotation and a machine ready to work at the mine are different scopes. The offer should explain which stages it covers.
Compare Offers Before Agreeing on a Purchase
Keep a record of what each seller has documented, what is included and what remains to be checked. Use the same inspection and delivery scope when comparing prices.
| Decision | Information to compare across offers |
|---|---|
| Machine identity | Serial number, model designation, year, engine version and current location |
| Configuration | Bucket, front linkage, tracks and included equipment |
| Condition and repair exposure | Inspection findings, component history and costs for agreed work |
| Production fit | Application assessment, truck match and relevant operating evidence |
| Delivered cost | Machine, preparation, shipment, destination and commissioning scope |
| Handover | Acceptance criteria, supplied documents, parts responsibilities and written warranty terms if offered |
An incomplete hour record, an unspecified bucket or unclear reassembly responsibility is a question to resolve before the commitment. Do not turn an unverified claim into a confirmed comparison value.
Is there a maximum number of hours I should accept?
A universal hour limit would overlook component history and condition. Compare total hours with documented rebuilds, inspection findings, planned utilisation and the repair allowance in your budget.
Can a yard video replace a purchase inspection?
A video is useful for an initial review. Agree on any additional measurements, diagnostic work and operating checks needed for the purchase, particularly when the recording does not demonstrate the intended loading duty.
