Size and Restricted Access
The 301.7 CR has a published retractable undercarriage width of 990 mm and an expanded width of 1,300 mm. That narrow retracted dimension is a major reason to consider it for gates, confined urban work, landscaping and utility access. Expand the undercarriage for the working stance specified by the manufacturer and follow the operator manual.
The 302 CR is heavier and should be selected after checking the actual access route, ground conditions and transport equipment. A model name alone does not confirm that the machine will pass through a particular opening. Measure the ordered configuration and include mirrors, blade, attachments and any protective structures in the access plan.
Digging and Application Fit
The CAT 302 CR has the higher published digging depth in the standard reference: 2,570 mm compared with 2,350 mm for the 301.7 CR standard stick. Caterpillar also publishes a 2,540 mm depth for a long-stick 301.7 CR configuration. This means the selected stick matters and a long-stick figure should not be applied to a standard-stick machine.
Choose the 301.7 CR when narrow access, lower operating weight and compact transport are the priorities and the required digging envelope remains within its confirmed configuration. Typical work includes landscaping, shallow utilities, property maintenance and confined-site construction.
Choose the 302 CR when the job benefits from its additional operating mass and published digging depth, provided the site and transport plan can accept the larger machine. Neither model should be selected from tonnage alone: hydraulic attachment requirements, lift charts, ground pressure and duty cycle also matter.
Transport and Shipping Considerations
The lighter 301.7 CR can simplify some inland transport and container-planning scenarios, but no shipping promise should be made without packed measurements. The 301.7 CR reference lists an approximate shipping height of 2,300 mm and overall shipping length of 3,590 to 3,620 mm depending on stick configuration.
For either model, confirm:
- Actual operating and shipping weight of the offered configuration.
- Overall length, width and height in the planned shipping position.
- Bucket, coupler and attachment packing arrangement.
- Lifting and lashing method.
- Container, flat-rack, breakbulk or Ro-Ro suitability for the selected route.
Attachment and Hydraulic Questions
Do not assume that two machines with the same model badge have the same auxiliary hydraulic equipment. Ask whether the offered unit includes one-way or two-way auxiliary flow, quick-coupler lines, the required coupler standard and the correct bucket or work tool. Confirm the attachment's mass, hydraulic flow and pressure requirements against the supplied machine configuration.
Which Model Should You Request?
Select the CAT 301.7 CR if the project places the greatest value on narrow access, a lower published weight range and compact handling. Select the CAT 302 CR if the higher published operating weight and digging depth better match the job and access is less restrictive.
